Roanoke Academy Gymnasium

 Athletics & Intramurals

Roanoke Academy offers an intramural sports program. Regardless of skill level, students are invited to join in the joy of amateur athletics. Participants emphasize teamwork, exercise, and friendly competition. Every incoming student is allocated to one of intramural teams. , though participation is voluntary. Sophomore year, they are assigned by draft to permanent teams. Students remain a member of these teams for life. Alumni are welcome to return and play any time. Faculty, and staff members are also assigned to teams and encouraged to join in the excitement.

 

Will you be a Marauder, Spartan, Druid, or Guardian (men’s teams)? Or an Amazon, Nymph, Maenad, or Fury (women’s teams)? Come and see!

 

Intramurals

The intramural sports include track and broom, flying polo, swimming, soccer, racquetball and zapball, gymnastics, dance, rowing, archery, croquet, ice skating. Track and broom includes hundred yard dash, long distance, long jumps, high jump, pole vaulting discus, broom dash, three-mile flyers heat, obstacle races—foot and broom, hoops course.

Intercollegiate Athletics 

 

Flying polo—“like polo without the manure”—is an intercollegiate sport that plays the other sorcerous academies in the Eastern League

 

Fencing practices Tuesdays and Saturdays in the Gym, and participates in intercollegiate fencing competitions—both Wise and Unwary.

 

Croquet -- once a year, on May Day, the current students compete against the alumni at croquet.

 

Additional Sports and Activities

Don't see the activity you enjoy? Roanoke Academy's Gymnasium has the unique ability to produce temporary versions of any sports equipment desired, including courses and courts. Want to play basketball? Go rollerskating? Play tennis? Just walk up to any closed door in the gymnasium hallway and make a request.
