​STUDENT LIFE

Roanoke Academy offers many extra-curricular activities to enrich students’ lives on campus.

 

Campus Jobs:

Every tutor has the option to employ a student assistant. In addition, the following places hire student workers: Storm King Café, Menagerie, Infirmary, Library, Grounds (Landscaping and gardening), Kitchens, Bookstore, Roanoke Alchemical Shoppe.

Student Council:

Once a month, a council of elected delegates, from each dorm and each class, meets to debate student issues.

​

Theater:

The theater at Dare Hall is available for plays, talent shows, sorcery showcases, musical performances and whatever kind of entertainment students might wish to provide. Musical groups on campus include:

Sophomore Choir: All sophomores in the upper school are required to participate in choir.

The Madrigals Singers: A madrigal signing group requiring auditions.

Chamber Music Challengers: chamber music group. All are welcome. Harmony not assured.

The Ginger Snaps: The musical--and red-headed--MacDannans clan and their relatives and friends.

Geometric Quartet: a strings group consisting of boys from Dare Hall.

Skunklaunchers: A punk/heavy metal group consisting of freshmen.

The Young Sorcerer's League or YSL

A long-established club with an august past. The YLS single-handedly defeated the Terrible Five during the Battle of Roanoke. The YLS specializes in teaching practical sorcery and in forging friendships between young sorcerers.

The Fencing Club

Devoted to learning the ancient art of sword play, the Fencing Club is one of the schools few intercollegiate organizations. The Roanoke Fencing Club routinely travels to meets with other colleges and universities and occasionally even competes against the Unwary.

​

The Treasure Hunters:

Want to increase the range of talismans that can be created in Alchemy class? Join the Treasure Hunters and help collect new and interesting objects from which new and unusual essences might be obtained.

 

The Roanoke Seers:

Learn to read omens, predict coming blessings and disasters, know secrets before your friends.

 

The Roanoke Glass:

Award-winning school newspaper. Students wishing to work on the paper must submit a portfolio of their work. Those who have no previous experience may join as grunt workers and learn the journalistic world from the bottom up.

 

Cook's Broth:

A cooking club that throws every May Day and helps prepare food for other holidays and occasions. 

​

Botany Club:

Come learn about the world of plants and flowers. Help care for the Oriental gardens, the herb garden, and other garden spots on campus.

 

Saturday Night Probability Club:

This club investigates probability through the use of playing card games. Poker, blackjack, and other games of chance are investigated fully.

​

Chess Club:

Increase your prowess at Chess. Top players compete on the intercollegiate level.

​

Photography Club:

Learn the vanishing art of darkroom development. Study composition, lighting, and other elements needed for elegant photography.

​

Late Night Starwatchers:

Can't fall asleep at night? Stay up late with us and learn the secrets of Astronomy. Meets at the planetarium on the roof of Roanoke Hall.

 

Birdwatchers' Guild:

Wake up early and don't know what to do with yourself? Come join us and see if you can spot every bird on The Hudson River Bird Trail's extensive list!

Roanoke Academy Yearbook:

Join the staff of the Roanoke Academy Yearbook and ensure that more photos of the things you love make the official records.

​

Private Clubs:

​

The Knights of Walpurgis

An invitation only club devoted to dueling and keeping law on campus.

​

Dare Hall Vampire Hunters:

A club devoted to ferreting out and destroying vampires and other undead scum. Private group

 

Die Horribly Debate Club:

A club devoted to discovering secrets and saving the universe, even at great risks to life and limb and endless, pointless debates about how to do it. Private group.
